Tomorrow is the Colgate Comp, which always signifies the start of comp season for me. They use it as a kick-off for the new school year and to introduce new students to the climbing facility. Many people come out for it, both new and returning students, as well as community members. The atmosphere at Colgate is great. It’s very low-key, collaborative and fun with prizes going to all levels. I highly encourage anyone in the area to check it out.
I’ve spent countless climbing sessions on Colgate’s wall, since it is the closest wall (other than the one in my garage) to my house. I’ve met a lot of great people over the years there and many of the milestones on my climbing path have happened at that gym. Their facility holds a special place in my heart. For 3 out of the past 4 years, their comp has been the first of the season for me. Usually falling at the end of August, it is a chance to transition between training over the summer and the grind of weekly comps from Oct – Feb. I love starting the season at a gym with familiar, friendly faces. And, of course, free pizza with entry always helps…
